The 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin were the first to be televised. The Nazi regime used them for propaganda, yet the star of the Games was the African-American athlete Jesse Owens with four gold medals. 3,963 athletes from 49 countries took part in the Games. Czechoslovakia won three silver medals. A new feature was the introduction of the Olympic Torch Relay from Olympia, Greece. Basketball was also introduced for the first time at the Olympic Games. The Games were accompanied by a spectacular organisation and modern sports facilities.
